Phoenix isn’t hurting for great Sonoran hot dogs, so every stand has to earn its place. Today I stopped by Son Dogos, parked at 16th Street and Southern, to see how it stacked up.
Right away, everything looked fresh. The tomatoes, onions, and other toppings tasted fresh, and nothing felt like it had been sitting around all day. They also served the hot dog with yellow peppers on the side, which added a nice little kick if you’re into a little extra heat.
One thing that really stood out was the bun. It was soft, fresh, and tasted like it wasn’t your typical grocery store bun. It held everything together without getting soggy, which is always a plus when you’ve got a fully loaded Sonoran dog.
As for the hot dog itself, it was solid. Good flavor, plenty of toppings, and exactly what I was hoping for. It may not be the best Sonoran hot dog I’ve ever had, but I’d definitely eat another one.
The only thing that gave me a little pause was the price. My hot dog was $7, which is a couple of dollars more than what I’m used to paying around Phoenix. Then again, maybe I’m just a cheap dog. Considering the fresh ingredients and the quality of the bread, I can understand why it’s priced a little higher.
Final Score: 7.9/10
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Son Dogos. Fresh-tasting ingredients, a great bun, and a flavorful Sonoran hot dog made it a worthwhile stop. If you’re around 16th Street and Southern, it’s definitely worth checking out and deciding for yourself if it’s worth the seven bucks.
