Kamaka provided me with this microphone setup for review purposes, but their influence doesn’t affect my assessment.
The XD2 Pro offers two wireless transmitter channels, enabling audio recording on both. However, one drawback is that you must remember to press the record button on each transmitter, and unfortunately, you can’t check the recording status on the receiver. This means you have to trust that it’s functioning correctly, particularly if you’re using it on talent. Yet, it’s a reliable backup audio source should anything happen to your primary camera recording. Each transmitter boasts around eight gigabytes of storage, allowing up to 24 hours of recorded audio, accessible via a USB-C cable connected to your computer.
A notable feature is the ability to connect the receiver directly to your computer, serving as an audio input device. This versatility enables you to enhance the audio quality during video calls or recordings on your computer. The transmitters come with built-in microphones, but the included lav (lavalier) microphones offer better sound quality and are slightly more discreet when attached to clothing. Kamaka’s inclusion of these lav mics is appreciated, as some competing sets require separate purchases for such accessories.
The kit conveniently includes clips for the transmitters and receiver that also function as cold shoe mounts, allowing direct attachment to a camera’s hot shoe mount. Activating recording mode on the transmitter is a simple process, and the included lav mics feature a convenient locking mechanism to secure them in place.
While this set has numerous advantages, a few drawbacks exist. Despite its affordability (ranging from $200 to $270), the lav mic cords are slightly short, limiting placement options for the transmitters. The size of the lav mics, even without the windscreen, is slightly larger compared to some competitors, and the windscreen for the built-in microphone, while effective in reducing wind noise, might appear distracting due to its size.
Additionally, the padded case included with the kit is somewhat bulky, negating the compactness of the wireless setup. Finally, there is a slight latency issue, noticeable when using multi-channel audio with a hard-wired microphone in conjunction with the XD2 Pro.

If budget constraints are a concern, comparing prices with the non-Pro version (Boom XD2) might be worth considering.
