Smith Makes His Statement in Brooklyn, Stops Matias to Become World Champion

Saturday night in Brooklyn delivered a statement win for British boxing, and it didn’t require much embellishment.

The 28-year-old from Sheffield moved to 19-0 with 14 knockouts, stopping Puerto Rican champion Subriel Matias via TKO at 2:24 of the fifth round at Barclays Center. It was a controlled, composed performance that turned decisive the moment the openings appeared.

Early rounds leaned Matias’ way. He was active, pressing, and held a narrow lead on the judges’ cards. Smith stayed patient, worked behind counters, and didn’t force the issue. Then the momentum shifted. Clean shots began landing. Matias slowed. A sharp combination put him down, and the referee stepped in shortly after as Smith closed with a sustained flurry.

The win came despite Matias entering the fight with momentum of his own, though his past low-level Ostarine flag remained part of the public record. Inside the ring, however, the result spoke for itself. Smith adjusted, timed the pressure, and finished the fight emphatically.
