Well, it’s official. Akon City is dead.
Remember back in 2018 when Akon came out saying he was gonna build a $6 billion futuristic city in Senegal? Solar-powered everything. Cryptocurrency as legal tender. Hotels, hospitals, malls, universities, all inspired by Wakanda. Straight-up Marvel movie vibes but in real life. People were hyped. It sounded insane in the best way.

Fast forward seven years… and yeah. One building. That’s it. One. No flying trains, no vibranium towers, no hologram conference centers. Just one sad little structure in Mbodiène.
Akon’s $6 billion futuristic “Wakanda-inspired” city project in Senegal has reportedly been abandoned.

Now, the Senegalese government has officially said “enough is enough” and canceled the project. They’re reclaiming most of the land and switching gears to a $1.2 billion resort development instead. Honestly, probably a smart move. At least a resort will actually get built and bring in some tourism money instead of just being a futuristic screensaver concept for a decade.
It’s kinda sad though. The idea was wild but beautiful. A city built by Akon for Africans. A symbol of progress. A blueprint for modern Africa. But at the end of the day, these mega-projects usually die the same way – lack of money, lack of planning, lack of realism. Turns out you can’t just drop a CGI city render on Instagram and call it a day.
Shoutout to Akon for dreaming big, though. The dude wanted to create Wakanda on Earth. Gotta respect the ambition. But for now, it’s back to reality. No Akon City. Just a canceled plan, an empty field, and a resort on the way.
